Our exploration
of competency based education (CBE) highlighted the role of adult educator as a
provider of learner-oriented, practically-focused teaching. As one of the
articles said, “In outcome-based education, product defines process.” This
means that a wide variety of teaching methods and approaches can be used toward
the goal of equipping the learner to reach relevant, tangible results. One
aspect of this approach to adult education is that it makes both learners and instructors
highly accountable, since there are clearly spelled out standards against which
graduates can be measured. In many settings, this can assist the
quality-assurance process.
