The reason that I chose
storytelling as a motivational technique is that it is an aspect of teaching
that I am trying to incorporate more into my own approach in the classroom. My
most natural way of teaching flows from my own learning style which is very
comfortable with abstract ideas. Yet I find that my students respond strongly
to stories that illustrate the ideas. Often they remember the stories better
than the abstractions. Stories can provide motivation for learning by “hooking”
the student on the importance or relevance of an idea, and showing what
different an idea makes in some real-life situation. The tool chosen is a
splendid overview about using stories well in our teaching.
