The web
conference was an interesting and valuable experience. I really enjoyed more
than one hour of dialogue with my learning partner, Denis. We had a very
natural exchange back and forth about teaching and learning. Exploring the
dynamics of learning in his setting as a teacher in a culinary arts program
provided lots of opportunity for discussion about competency based education
(CBE). One valuable insight I gained from Denis was the idea that CBE fosters
confidence in the learner. By performing tasks to the required level (our main
example was learning to make a cream soup!) the learner gradually develops the
kind of professional confidence that really is needed for a chef in a
restaurant. Personalized feedback aiming at achieving a high standard, and
working at it until the skill is really strongly honed, produces a confident
result in the learner.
